Tips to Maximize Your Home’s Energy Efficiency This Winter

Energy EfficiencyWinter is quickly approaching and with winter comes chilly weather and high energy bills; of course there are many ways to avoid high heating bills.  With the help of Energy Star, we have found some tips to help you heat your home and conserve energy this winter season.
First, make a couple changes indoors and be sure to change your air filter well needed. The air filter should be changed when they begin to appear dirty, or every three months, during the heavy use times like winter when you’ll need to replace the filters more frequently.
Install a programmable thermostat so you don’t have to keep a constant watch over the heat. A programmable thermostat is ideal for homeowners who are away from home during set periods of time throughout the week. According to Energy Star, proper use of pre-programmed settings on the thermostat can save you about $180 every year in energy costs.
Insulate heating and air ducts that move air to and from a forced air furnace, central air, and or heat pumps. Sealing and insulating ducts that run through attics, crawlspaces and basements or garage can improve the efficiency of your heating and cooling system by as much as 20 percent.
