Even though it’s one of the most detested chores, window cleaning is a necessity as clean windows can completely transform not only the look of a home’s interior by letting in more natural light, but its exterior as well. The truth is, this task doesn’t have to be a chore at all. A recent article in This Old Home notes that the reason most people have such a hard time doing this correctly is because they attempt to clean the window’s exterior side the same way they clean its interior.
“Homeowners insist on doing it with wadded-up paper towels or newspaper, spray cleaner, and a ton of elbow grease,” says Brent Weingard, owner of Expert Window Cleaners in New York City.
“All that rubbing isn’t a good idea. You’re just moving dirt around from one spot to another and putting a static charge on the glass, which attracts dust and dirt. As soon as you finish, the window looks dirty again.”
In the article, Weingard went on to demonstrate some successful techniques for cleaning both Picture Windows and Multipane Windows. He notes that doing it “the way the pros do” is really the most effective way to go.
